Should I Buy a Chromebook? Buying Guide and Advice

A Chromebook is a laptop. Instead of using Windows 10 or macOS, Chromebooks run Chrome OS from Google. These machines are designed to be used primarily when connected to the Internet, with most applications and documents in the cloud. Chromebooks are good laptops for the education sector, and are now expanding into many other areas.

Cost for a Chromebook?

Most Chromebooks are quite cheap. You can buy the Acer Chromebook R11 at an affordable and very light price – with an 11.6-inch HD screen, Intel Celeron N3150 CPU and 2GB RAM – for $169. Samsung Chromebook Pro $549, a 12.3-inch laptop equipped with a stylus with 2400 x 1600 pixel display, Intel Core M3 processor and 4GB of RAM.

You might end up paying a lot for a Windows 10 laptop, because the average selling price for a Win 10 computer is $448, according to the NPD. There are more reasonable options, as we’ve detailed here, but the PC laptop market has a much higher limit than the Chromebook market.

You may even have to spend $1,199 to buy a 12.3-inch Pixelbook, and it’s more expensive to use the Core i7 for $1,649. The Pixelbook costs the cheapest $999, with 128 GB of storage, 8GB of RAM and a Core i5 processor, which can use both Chrome and Android.

But is Chromebook suitable for you? Our guide to buying Chromebooks below will have answers to these questions.

Chromebook models you should buy

  • Chromebook has the best overall: Asus Chromebook Flip C302CA, priced at about 499 dollars
  • The cheapest price: Chromebook Lenovo N22, $ 159 price
  • Best for school: Dell Chromebook 3189, priced at 329 dollars
  • Best for businesses: Google Pixelbook, priced at $ 999

The Chromebook runs Google’s operating system Chrome OS, operating system, so it can use Google’s suite of applications and often depends on the Internet connection. Although you can log in to Chrome OS as a guest, we recommend you sign in to the system with your Google account for the best experience.

Application on Chromebook

Applications on Chromebooks are getting better and better, but these laptops are still optimized for Google applications, such as Gmail, Google Calendar, and Google Drive.

Currently, Chromebooks can use Android including Samsung Chromebook Plus, Asus Chromebook Flip, Dell Chromebook 3189 and Google’s own Pixelbook. If you want to use a Chromebook for your school study, choose a Chromebook listed here.

Unfortunately, popular software applications, such as Adobe Photoshop and Microsoft Office suites, are not available on all Chromebooks. The Android version of Office is underway for Chromebooks with access to the Google Play Store. If you need Office, but your computer doesn’t have an Android app, you can use Microsoft Office Online, a free version of Office on the cloud via Chrome browser.

It’s best to combine Office Android applications or Office Online if you already have a lot of Office files you’re switching to your Chromebook. There are usually formatting issues when importing third-party documents to Drive. Fortunately, Google Drive lets you save documents to Microsoft formats, so you can still share files with non-Chromebook users.

On the other hand, there are some photo editors available for Chrome OS, including Pixlr (free), which looks a lot like Photoshop. Unfortunately, no Chromebook application can edit Adobe’s. PSD file.

If you are familiar with Linux applications, you will have more options. Previously released Chrome OS releases revealed that Chromebooks will support Linux programs, meeting the needs of some Chromebook owners with a higher understanding of technology. Pixelbook is the first Chromebook to receive this option and others will receive this feature later.

Use offline (no Internet connection)

Chromebooks are designed to rely primarily on the Internet, which means many applications will not work if you do not use the Internet. There are over 200 offline Chrome apps that can work without an Internet connection, including Gmail, Pocket and Google Drive, and many upcoming Android apps will also work offline.

Games on Chromebook

You can still play games on a Chromebook, but your options are few. Chrome online stores offer common functions like Bejeweled and Cut the Rope, but you won’t have the same options as you do on a Windows or Mac computer.

Of course, Chromebooks with Android support run many games like Fallout Shelter, Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes and Minecraft.

Chromebooks often handle graphics quite poorly. Therefore, if you want to handle graphics you should not choose Chromebook.

Special features of Chromebooks

Google Help has been included in Chrome OS in Pixelbook. Although you can activate it with the Pixelbook Pen, the $ 99 accessory is not required when you have the dedicated Assistant key on the keyboard of that laptop. Although the launcher is now integrated with Google Now, providing you with information cards for the current weather and local news stories, we can see it is switching to Google Feed.

Google has redesigned the virtual keyboard to use the touch screen, making it easier to use on 2-in-1 devices like the Asus Chromebook Flip. With a minimalist design, the on-screen keyboard lets you choose the text to enter. When we tested that feature, most Chromebooks were always accurate in recognizing our text.

In addition, shortly afterward, Android smartphone users will be able to receive text notifications and call notifications that pop up on their screens.

Chromebook battery life

Chromebooks often provide a fairly long battery life. Of the 10 Chromebooks we reviewed last year, we found an average battery life of 9 hours and 15 minutes, including continuous web surfing over Wi-Fi.

You’ll notice the Acer Chromebook R 13’s battery life is 11 hours. Google’s own Pixelbook, battery life is 7 hours and 43 minutes.

We recommend choosing a Chromebook with a battery life of at least 9 hours. While some affordable Windows 10 laptops, such as the Lenovo Miix 310 (with a battery life of over 12 hours) and Dell Inspiron 11 3000 (more than 13 hours), provide excellent battery life, average Super portable laptops are shorter with an average of 8 hours and 21 minutes.

The durability of Chromebooks

Chromebook for Work is built to withstand crashing, scratches. In our test, the Acer Chromebook 14 was quite durable, scratch-resistant and not broken when dropped from a 48-inch height on a plywood board.

Both the Acer Chromebook 14 for Work and ThinkPad 13 Chromebook (another For Work model) are certified MIL-STD-810G, which means they are able to pass the durability test that the US military equipment must pass. Acer Chromebook 14 For Work can survive at extreme temperatures (except 20.2 degrees to 140 degrees F), humidity, vibration, rain, sand and dust.

Durable Chromebooks are not just for adults. Acer Chromebook 11 N7 C731T is child-friendly. It may not be damaged after a full glass of water enters its keyboard, as well as falling from a height of 48 inches.

Secure on Chromebook

Chromebook for Work models also provide tools that IT administrators need to manage laptops in and out of the office. Google’s Lenovo ThinkPad 13 Chromebook and Pixelbook include Trusted Platform Module security technology, a security chip that helps prevent malicious attackers from staying away from your password.

What do you need?

Most Chromebooks range in size from 11 to 13 inches. That means you won’t have trouble choosing a small Chromebook, such as the 11-inch Acer Chromebook 11 N7, the 12.5-inch Asus Chromebook Flip C302CA and the 13-inch ThinkPad 13 Chromebook.

These models usually weigh less than 3 pounds, making them the most portable and wonderful devices for children. However, the screen size and keyboard can be difficult to use with adults.

Web surfers, completing work, watching movies and playing games can choose the Acer Chromebook 14 for Work 14 inches or the Acer Chromebook 15 15 inches, the only Chrome OS laptop on 13 inches.

What parameters do you need?

Because Chromebooks are primarily for online use, the specifications need to be as high as the configuration for Windows laptops. Here’s what you need for a Chromebook:

RAM

When it comes to RAM, Chromebook comes with 2GB or 4GB RAM. Although the models have 4GB of RAM more expensive, we found a significant difference for multi-tasking.

Both the HP Chromebook 14 (4GB RAM) and the Lenovo 100S Chromebook (2GB RAM) have the same Celeron N2840 processor, but the HP laptop has handled more than a dozen open tabs without trouble when Lenovo is slow more when opening 10 Chrome tabs open and Spotify playing. Our tests of the Lenovo Ideapad 100S Windows version ($ 246.00 ) show that similar computers can handle a larger stack of tabs.

CPU

The processor in your Chrome OS machine helps determine the level of Chromebook activity, especially when you open multiple tabs and are streaming videos or playing games.

We found Intel Celeron chips in many Chromebooks and they often provide acceptable speeds. For example, the Chromebook Chromebook 11 N7 C731T (Celeron N3060, RAM 4GB) costs $ 229, can run 8 Chrome tabs simultaneously, but will be slower after we open another tab.

You can get a Windows 10 laptop with similar specifications and prices, such as the Dell Inspiron 11 3000 ($ 229).

The biggest drawback to Chromebooks is the use of Core M, such as the Asus Chromebook Flip C302CA ($ 499), and the Samsung Chromebook Pro ($ 549) is a pretty high price. Don’t worry about a powerful CPU that will affect battery life, as the Samsung Chromebook Pro (Core M3) provides more power and longer battery life (more than 8 hours of battery use) compared to Chromebook Plus (ARM MediaTek, nearly 8 hours of battery life.

If you want your Chromebook to have enough speed to run your favorite Android apps, consider a laptop with Core i5 and Core i7 CPUs, such as Pixelbook.

If you want a Chromebook without Intel chips, take a look at the Acer Chromebook 13 of 2014, the only Chrome OS with Nvidia chip (Tegra K1). While it provides excellent graphics performance, it does not provide a touch screen.

Memory size

Because Chrome OS is so light, Chromebooks often don’t need much memory. Most Chromebooks have only 16GB of storage on the motherboard and that’s all you need. After supporting Android on Chromebooks, users will find ways to use the SD card reader in laptops like the Acer Chromebook 14, where you can expand the memory up to 64GB.

Google gives you 100 GB of free storage on Google Drive when you buy a Chromebook, although it only lasts for two years, then you’ll only have 15 GB of free storage.

Screen

The size of the screen is not the only important thing. While we appreciate the bright, accurate palette in Samsung Chromebook 3 $179, its size of 1366 x 768 pixels is best for writing and reading. But if you want sharper images, video and graphics, with a full-HD (1920 x 1080 pixel) screen, such as the $359 Acer Chromebook R 13.

The Asus Chromebook Flip C302CA 449 USD also has a touch screen and is one of the few applications that currently supports Android applications. If you want to use What’s, Super Mario Run and other apps on Chromebooks, choose a Chromebook with a touch screen.

Pixelbook offers one of the best displays we’ve seen in Chromebooks, with QHD 2400 × 1600 pixel resolution and 421 nits of brightness.

Who do you buy a Chromebook for?

In general, the best way to know whether someone likes to own a Chromebook or not depends on whether they spend most of their time on the Chrome browser.

If you buy this Chromebook for others, you should take a moment to consider how they will use the device. Chromebooks are especially good for children because they are easy to use and quite safe.

Children still learning how to use computers can be more receptive to how the operating system works. Can’t play Minecraft games on Chrome OS, but Minecraft can be played on Android.

Some older people may never really understand Windows enough to use their computers regularly, but they will use Chrome OS easily.

Should I buy a Chromebook?

Chromebooks are affordable and offer good performance, and the use of Android applications is increasing Chromebook capabilities. If you are looking for a simple laptop to be able to watch videos, online services and you like Google services, you will be satisfied with Chromebooks.
